Abstract

616,128. Centrifugal fans; stuffing-box substitutes. RUPPEN, A. Aug. 28, 1946, No. 25805. Convention date, March 6, 1943. [Classes 110 (i) and 122 (v)] A submersible pump housed in a watertight bell 1a, is characterised in that the driving motor 5 is carried by a central tubular support 6 dividing the upper compartment of the bell 1a into two chambers, one chamber being centrally disposed and in direct connection with the inlet 10 of the pump 8, the other chamber being annularly disposed and in direct connection with the compartment housing the motor. The two chambers are separated by a mechanical or hydraulic seal 23, 24 and means are provided to ensure that no difference in pressure occurs between the two chambers. This object is achieved by the provision of a U-tube 25, Fig. 1, or by the auxiliary chamber 26 and connecting conduits 27, 28, Fig. 2. The volume of air in the annularly-disposed chamber may be limited by means of the solid lining 29, Fig. 2, or by increasing the diameter of the tubular support 6. When pumping is stopped the level of liquid in the discharge pipe 12 falls to the level N-N of the immersion liquid and air is admitted by snifting valve 17 to the annular space surrounding the tube 15. When pumping is resumed the air in this space is discharged through tubes 19, 22 to the inside of the tubular support 6 to maintain sufficient air therein. The floating valve 21 prevents the discharge of liquid through the tube 22 to the interior of the support 6.
