Abstract
615,811. Vertically-driven rock breakers. CORNETT, W. V. Aug. 9, 1946, No. 23696. Convention date, May 27. [Class 68 (i)] [Also in Groups X and XXIII] In a machine for breaking up concrete road surfaces and like operations a pneumatic reciprocating hammer 52 is carried by horizontal and rearwardly extending members 50, 51 of a vertical boom 44 which is carried on a turntable 47 mounted on a vehicle chassis 10. The chassis is mounted on a tricycle undercarriage and is steered from the operator's position 17 by a hand wheel 20 and a rod 21. The rear wheels 14, 15 which are fitted with normal braking arrangements are driven from an air motor 28 by a shaft 29, a transmission gear 30 and shaft 31 through a differential gear incorporated in the axle assembly 13. There is also taken from the gear 30 a shaft 32 which by worm gearing 43, 49 rotates the boom 44. The selection as to which of the shafts 31 or 32 is driven at any particular instant is determined by the position of a control handle 63 and clutch mechanism 42. Compressed air may be obtained from a compressor on the chassis or from an external source. A valve 33 enables the motor to be reversed. All the operations of the machine are controlled from the position 17. The boom is arranged to pivot at 57 when stay rods 58, 59, 60 are removed so that the hammer may be used in a horizontal position, a hoist 68 being provided for raising and lowering the boom.
