Abstract

An insecticidal, fungicidal or herbicidal powder for application to plants is prepared by generating an electric field, and passing a suspension in air of the powder through the electric field. Thus the powder in air suspension may be passed in the vicinity of a high-voltage electrode charged to about 20,000 volts which may be situated in the neighbourhood of or beyond the outlet aperture of the apparatus. Ionisation may be increased by coating the electrode with a radioactive substance such as thorium oxide or by submitting it to short wave radiation. The electrode may be one or more straight electrified wires pointed if desired or a vibrating electrified metal plate upon which the powder is distributed from a hopper. Alternatively, the powder suspension may be electrified by friction, e.g. by being blown tangentially into the base of a truncated conical chamber made of "Bakelite" (Registered Trade Mark) of which the small open base serves as the nozzle. Triangular metal blades may be secured to the wall of the chamber to eliminate electricity of opposite charge which tends to accumulate thereon. Substances treated are sulphur, naphthalene or nitrated phenol. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the electrification of air suspensions of liquids such as nicotine. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:An insecticidal, fungicidal or herbicidal powder for application to plants is prepared by generating an electric field, and passing a suspension in air of the powder through the electric field. Thus the powder in air suspension may be passed in the vicinity of a high-voltage electrode charged to about 20,000 volts which may be situated in the neighbourhood of or beyond the outlet aperture of the apparatus. Ionisation may be increased by coating the electrode with a radio active substance such as thorium oxide or by submitting it to short wave radiation. Specified powdery substances treated are sulphur, naphthalene or nitrated phenols. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the electrification of air suspensions of liquids such as nicotine. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
