Abstract
700,719. Particle accelerators. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. July 15, 1952 [July 27, 1951], No. 17879/51. Class 39(1) In an electric discharge tube such as a linear accelerator in which the beam of charged particles is projected through a magnetic focusing coil, the coil is inside the evacuated container, comprises a small number of turns carrying a heavy current, and consists of tubing through which a cooling fluid is passed. In the travelling-wave linear accelerator shown the spacing between the turns of the coil 9 is progressively reduced along the beam path. The magnetic field may be enhanced by providing axially extending permanent magnets inside the container. For example a tranverse plate 15 of magnetic material and axial magnets 16 are provided adjacent the gun 1, or an annular magnet magnetized axially may be used. Local reduction of the focusing field may be effected by connecting shunts across certain turns. The coil 9 is carried on spacers supported by a perforated tubular insulating former 14. The former may however be dispensed with, the coil being carried by the leads 10, 11. The wave guide 6 feeds the travelling waves to the accelerator tube 2. The waves are fed back from the output end of the tube 2 by way of the wave guide 8, 7, shown broken.
