Abstract

615,273. Hydraulic couplings. THORPE, E. H. July 26, 1946, No. 22328. [Class 69 (ii)] In a hydraulic power transmission apparatus comprising a hydraulic pump driving a hydraulic motor through a main liquid circuit, wherein in addition to the main circuit an auxiliary reservoir is arranged to receive back through the pump excess liquid from the motor when the motor runs slower than the pump, the excess liquid is returned from the reservoir to the pump as driving energy during a period of decreasing pressure in the pump. The pump comprises a spur-wheel 4 on a driving shaft 2 meshing with spur-wheels 5 and 6. The motor is a duplication of the pump and comprises a spur-wheel 8 on a driven shaft 3 meshing with spur-wheels at 90 degrees to the wheels 5 and 6. The pump and motor are separated by a plate 12 containing ports which permit liquid from the pump to drive the motor and to return from the motor to the pump. A block 16 attached to the spur-wheel 4 has a chamber 15 for each of the valleys between the teeth of the wheel. Each chamber is connected to its corresponding valley by a passage 17, and contains a spring-loaded piston 18. If the pump is unable to drive the motor at its own speed, the liquid not delivered to the motor is delivered to the chamber 15. Compression of the spring 19 commences and increases until the associated spur-wheel valley is occupied to the fullest extent by a tooth of one of the spurwheels 5; after the said spur-wheel valley has passed this position the pressure decreases and 'becomes normal again, the energy stored in the spring 19 being released to impart a driving thrust on the pump. Liquid expelled from the motor can enter a space 23 and hence through openings 25 to behind the pistons 18. If this liquid is at greater pressure than that in front of the pistons 18 it passes through self-acting, non-return valves 26 and will make good any loss of liquid which the motor has taken by over-running the pump.
