Abstract
1,233,460. Hydrostatic transmissions. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. 19 July, 1968, No. 34462/68. Heading F2D. In a hydrostatic transmission having a fluid pressure supply 12 and fluid control means in flow series and supplying at least two fluid motors, the fluid control means includes an inlet from the fluid pressure supply, a fluid metering supply device 16, 20 connected to each fluid motor 22, 24, 26, 28 and a fluid metering balance device 18 connected to the outlets of the fluid metering supply devices. An enginedriven pump 12 supplies the metering devices 16, 18 and 20, each of which comprises two intermeshing gear wheels, the device 16 supplying fluid to motors 22, 24 which drive the vehicle's front wheels and device 18 supplying fluid to motors 26, 28 which drive the rear wheels. The flow from metering device 18 is split evenly between the front and rear wheels so that the total flow to the front and rear motors is 33<SP>1</SP>/ 3 % and 66<SP>2</SP>/ 3 % respectively. If the front wheels tend to over-run the pressure drop at the motor inlet causes the now from device 18 to be increasingly diverted to motors 22, 24 until the combined flow from devices 16, 18 is insufficient to maintain this pressure at which point non- return valve 32 is closed and the system operates with the front and rear wheels positively driven. The system operates similarly if the rear wheels tend to over-run.
