Abstract

Compounds of the formula <FORM:0614763/IV(b)/1> wherein Y is a phenoxy radical, carrying at least one choloro or nitro group or both attached to the ring and which may carry other substituents, and wherein R1 is an alkyl radical containing at least 8 and not more than 18 carbon atoms, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrocarbon radicals and R2 and R3 may be linked together to form a heterocyclic ring with the pentavalent nitrogen, and R4 and R3 together may represent the identical hydrocarbon substituent attached by a double bond as in the case of the alkyl pyridinium salts are produced by reacting the appropriate quaternary ammonium compound with a chloro- or nitro- or chloronitrophenoxy compound. The cationic component of the quaternary ammonium salts may be octadecyltrimethylammonium, dodecyltrimethylammonium, N-dodecylpyridinium, benzyldodecyldimethylammonium, N-octylpyridinium, decyltrimethylammonium, cetyltriethylammonium, myristyltrimethylammonium and N - nonyl - N - methylpiperidium. The anionic radical may be 2 : 4 - dinitrophenoxy, pentachlorophenoxy, dodecylnitrophenoxy, 3,5 - dinitro - 2 - methyl - trichlorophenoxy, 4 - chloro - 2 - nitrophenoxy, 2-chloro-4-nitrophenoxy, 2-chloro-4-nitro-6-methylphenoxy and tetrachlorophenoxy.
