Abstract

2 - Arylguanidino - 4 - halogenpyrimidines, wherein either or both of the 5- and 6-positions may be unsubstituted or may be occupied by a hydrocarbon radical or the 5- and 6-positions may be joined by an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical to form an alicyclic ring, and wherein the aryl radical of the 2-arylguanidino group may be unsubstituted or substituted by one or more non-acidic substituents, are made by reacting an appropriate 2-arylguanidine-4-hydroxypyrimidine with the pentachloride, pentabromide, oxychloride or oxybromide of phosphorus or with a mixture of such agents. Reaction is effected by heating the reagents together, optionally in the presence of a solvent, e.g. monochlorobenzene, or a diluent, e.g. excess of phosphorus oxychloride. In general, the substituents on the aryl group may be hydrocarbon radicals (which themselves may bear substituents and which may be attached to the aryl radical directly or through an oxygen, nitrogen or sulphur atom or sulphonyl or carbonyl group), halogen atoms or cyano, nitro, amino, acylamino or esterified carboxyl groups. In the examples, 2-aryl-guanidino-4-chloro-6-methylpyrimidines are prepared using phosphorus oxychloride. Specification 581,334, 581,345 and 581,346 are referred to.
