Abstract

Azo dyes are prepared by coupling processes in which a surface active aminoxide or phosphine oxide which contains an aliphatic chain having 8-22 carbons or an aryl or cycloalkyl residue having at least one alkyl side chain of 4-12 carbon atoms is added in the coupling process. In particular the compounds have the formula <FORM:1119761/C4-C5/1> in which X is nitrogen or phosphorus, R1 is an organic radical containing an aliphatic chain having 8-22 carbon atoms or an aryl or cycloalkyl residue as above. R2 and R3 are each alkyl, aryl or aralkyl radicals or R2 and R3 together represent an alkylene radical having 4-6 carbon atoms which together with X form a heterocyclic ring. Preferably the compounds used are trialkyl-aminoxides or phosphine oxides which contain an alkyl radical of 8-22 carbon atoms and two alkyl radicals of 1-5 carbon atoms each used as 0.5 to 30% by weight of the azo dye obtained.
