Abstract
614,724. Bearings. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. July 22, 1946, No. 21837. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1945. [Class 12 (i)] A thrust bearing having self-adjusting or fixed pads to receive the thrust of a shaft collar and leaving oil channels between the pads has the pads shaped so that over the whole radial depth of the segments the ratio of the circumferential width at any point, to the radius measured to that point, decreases' as the said radius increases. The pads may be symmetrical as shown at B1, B2 and C in Fig. 1 or asymmetrical as shown at D in Fig. 2 for a clockwise rotating shaft, where both radial edges incline towards the same side with respect to radial lines drawn through the inner points of the edges, the lagging edge having a greater inclination than the leading edge. This latter inclination tends to direct the outflowing oil toward the outer edge of the segments whilst the inclination of the leading edge serves to scoop the fresh oil. A segment E is shown having an obliquely serrated lagging edge to achieve the outward expulsion of the oil. The leading edge of such a segment may be straight or serrated. Scrapers may be provided in the channels between the segments to remove the oil film sticking to the shaft collar. The bearing surfaces of the segments may be slightly concave to allow a thicker oil film at the centre than at the leading and lagging edges. Fig. 3 shows a wedge-shaped dam H formed in a channel between two segments to accelerate the oil velocity at the radially outer limits.
