[Classes 18 and 94 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] In a machine for closing the cover of a preformed and fiiled carton A, the carton is brought to the machine on a conveyor 25 and delivered on to a table 31 from which it is transferred to a table 43 by a plunger 29 having a reciprocating vertical and horizontal movement. The carton when on the table 43 is carried forward by chain driven spaced arms 45, the front faces SO of which engage the carton cover 13 in the vicinity of the folds joining the flaps 14 and 21 to the cover and urge the cover through a frame 51, the aperture of which is slightly larger than the cover 13. The cross arms of the frame project in front of the uprights so that the flap 14 is folded at rght angles ito the cover before the flaps 21. Next the upstanding tabs 19 are folded over the contents of the carton by clips 67 carried on spring loaded bell crank levers 62 mounted in recesses 61 in the guides 59, 60. The carton is urged forward.clear from the arms 45 by an arcuate guiding horn moving faster than the arms 45. The centre of curvature of the arcuate underface of the horn coincides with the fold joining the cover to the end wall so that as the guide rails 69 force the cover down the end wall is not forced out of the vertical and the flaps can be guided into the appropriate recesses in the side walls by suitable chamfers being formed on the guides 59, 60 and the horn 72. The closed carton is discharged down an inclined ramp. A blank for the carton comprises a base 10, walls 11, 12 and 16 and a cover 13, the walls 11, 12 having formed thereon locking flaps 17, 20 respectively which, when the box is shaped, enter slots 29. The cover carries flaps 14 and 21 which engage the slots 75 and 24 in the walls 11 and 16, whilst ears 19 are provided on the flaps 17 and can be folded over the contents. A lining 13 is pasted over the blank before it is bent along the fold lines 15, 22.
