Abstract

1,168,629. Making boxes. CALEDEX MACHINE CO. Ltd. 15 Dec., 1966 [21 Dec., 1965], No. 54224/65. Heading B5D. [Also in Division B8] In a box conveying and surface wrapping machine, a transfer mechanism movable between a transfer station on the conveyer and the wrapping machine, has limit stops 12, 13 for locating the front FW of a box and latch devices 23, 24 which are movable to engage the rear of the box. Each latch device 23, 24 comprises a latch 26<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 8, pivoted at 29<SP>1</SP> beneath a bracket base 25<SP>1</SP> adjustably mounted on a side transfer arm 9 which reciprocates longitudinally of the conveyer. On return of the transfer mechanism from the wrapping machine to the transfer station, the outer surface of a guide rail 40, 40 is engaged by an outer roller 37, 37<SP>1</SP> on the latch 26, 26<SP>1</SP> which is thereby moved outwardly against the action of a spring 32, 32<SP>1</SP>. During a dwell in the movement of the transfer mechanism, an inverted box and lid with associated wrapper is advanced to the transfer station along the conveyer, the forward lap of which is temporarily lowered as disclosed in Specification 1,005,189 to prevent fouling of the wrapper flaps by the transfer mechanism. The movement of the transfer mechanism is then restarted until the roller 37, 37<SP>1</SP> reaches an aperture 43a, 43a<SP>1</SP> in the guide rail 40, 40<SP>1</SP> whereupon the latch 26, 26<SP>1</SP> is swung laterally inwards by the spring 32, 32<SP>1</SP> so that the rear wall of the box is engaged by a roller 39, 39<SP>1</SP> on the latch 26, 26<SP>1</SP>. The wrapper flaps may be held by suction elements.
