Abstract

613,948. Hydraulic couplings. BROCKHOUSE ENGINEERING (SOUTHPORT), Ltd., and RHODES, C. G. March 15, 1946, No. 8047. [Class 69 (ii)] - In a hydro-kinetic power transmission apparatus the turbine 13 is provided with valve means adapted automatically to open the ducts 19 between the turbine vanes when either the drag of 'the liquid on the valve . means which is produced by the rotation of the impeller, or the turbine speed itself exceed predetermined values, means being provided for maintaining the said valve means in the open position against the pressure of closure means, for example spring means, so long as the turbine speed exceeds a predetermined value; and irrespective of the drag of the liquid on the valve means. The valve means are constituted by forming each inlet end 18 of the turbine vanes 17 separate from the remainder of the corresponding vane. The ends 18 are carried by a ring 22 which also carries spring-loaded bob-weights 31. The ring 22 moves on a bearing 23 on a supporting ring 24 fixed to the turbine 13 and is provided with lugs 29a, 29b which co-operate with lugs 27a, 27b, on the ring 24 to limit the extent of the angular movement of the vane ends 18. When the impeller 10 is rotating at speeds within its normal operational range, the drag of the liquid which is produced by the impeller and which acts on the movable vane ends 18 causes these to move towards the open position shown in Fig. 2. At high speeds centrifugal force urges the weights 31 outwards, and the weights react against the lugs 27b to move the vane ends 18 into alignment with the main body of the vanes 17, leaving the ducts 19 completely open. As speed decreases, the springs on the weights 31 urge them inwards and the vane ends are moved to the position where the ducts are closed. The vane ends may be displaced manually or may be temporarily locked. According to the Provisional Specification the movable ends may be provided on the impeller, or on the vanes of the reaction member in the case of a torque converter.
