Abstract
444,171. Hydraulic transmission of power. SALERNI, P. M., 23, Carlton House Terrace, Westminster. June 14, 1934, No. 17669. [Class 69 (ii)] An hydraulic torque converter particularly for mechanically propelled vehicles is provided with means for automatically moving the reaction vanes into operative position by the combined effect of the difference between the speeds of the driving and driven members, and of the speed of the driven member or roadspeed. In the form shown, which is generally similar to the transmitter described in Specification 425,538, the reaction vanes are adjusted by a piston 11 acted on by hydraulic pressure entering through a port 20, and having a centrifugally opened valve 16 which by means of a spring 17 normally closes a passage 18 extending through the piston. The piston is retained in the position shown until sufficient pressure is attained, by a piston ring engaged in a groove 11a with slightly inclined sides ; a return spring is provided.
