[Classes 96 and 140] Long-fibred vegetable material, e.g. straw fed in at 8 is compressed and forced along a broad passage 16 by a reciprocating plunger 3 which shears off the material as it enters the passage 16. The front edge of the plunger and/or the edge of the passage 16 may be formed as a square or oblique or zig-zag knife-edge, and such knives may co-act like the blades of scissors. A covering sheet 14, e.g. of paper, cardboard, or fabric may be applied to one or both surfaces of the compressed fibre-board, with the aid of adhesive. The walls of the passage 16 may be heated.
