Abstract
613,325. Uniting by fusion. LINDE AIR PRODUCTS CO. June 19, 1946, No. 18354. Convention date, July 13, 1945. [Class 83 (iv)] The electrode of an inertgas-blanketed electric welding- torch is cooled near its tip. A conducting electrode-carrier 18 supports a tungsten &c. electrode 16 projecting through an orifice 15 in a cylindrical gas shield 14 held by an insulating handle 10. The electrode 16 is adjustably gripped at the split end of the carrier 18 by a nut 20. The annular hollow tip 25 of the carrier 18 is fed with coolant through tubes 26, 27, and a tube 32 carries the inert gas to the underside of a distributing skirt 34 concentric with the carrier 18. In a modification the cooling-annulus 25 comprises a tube externally surrounding the carrier tip, and the gas skirt is replaced by a fixed annulus with orifices, and the electrode 16 is held in a sleeve. In a further modification the tip of the gas shield 14 is fluid-cooled.
