Abstract
613,228. Electrolytic pickling. SWINDIN, N. June 11, 1946, No. 17445. [Class 41] Steel strip is pickled by passage through an acid bath between electrodes connected to a source of alternating current. In the apparatus shown, the strip enters through a gas trap 9 in the domed roof 3, passes under rollers 11 and leaves by a gas-trap 9a. The roof 3 encloses the tank, minimizing heat loss but permitting escape of gases. The electrodes 6, 6a are supported above and below the strip by vertical insulated members at each end, one of which passes through an insulated opening 4 in the dome for connection to a bus-bar. Current density of about 100 amps./sq. ft. at 12-50 volts and frequency 80-100 cycles is employed. The bath may be dilute sulphuric acid of 12-15 per cent with or without hydrochloric acid up to 3 per cent and may be heated. When the strip is heavily scaled it may be first treated in the sulphuric acid bath and then in a hydrochloric acid bath. The baths may be arranged in a series. The strip passes from the acid treatment tanks to neutralizing and cleaning tanks. It is stated in the Provisional Specification that ferrous sulphate may be recovered from the first bath.
