[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion.-A welded joint for uniting one plate of a machine to a clamping plate by means of which the first plate is secured by clamping to a third element has the first plate welded to the clamping plate on both sides of its centre line in such a manner that the plane of resistance of the first plate intersects the clamping plate between the welded points and bending stresses on the first plate are thus practically eliminated. The web plate or wall of the framing of a combustion engine may thus be welded to the clamping flange to which the bed plate is secured. The web plate 1 is welded to the clamping flange 2 by a pair of connecting parts 3, 4 welded along their lower edges to the flange 2 at both sides of the longitudinal central plane of the latter. The plane of resistance of the plate b-b intersects the longitudinal central plane a-a of the flange between the welds within the clamping element proper or within the distance c below the clamping surface corresponding to the height of the clamping element. The parts 3, 4 are arranged in planes parallel to the longitudinal axis of the flange 2. The flange contains plain or threaded holes for clamping bolts or studs arranged either in the central axis of the flange or parallel thereto. The part 3 may be formed by bending the plate 1 or may be welded thereto either as a continuous strip or as a number of spaced pieces. The part 4 may be a continuous part or a series of spaced pieces. In another form the plate 1 may be formed with slits, Fig. 3, and the parts 7 bent to opposite sides of the plate. In a further form, the connecting part or parts may consist of V-sections 10, Fig. 7, or curved sections. In another form, the piece 1 and also the strip 9 Fig. 11, may be provided with slots 12 or holes for manipulating the clamping bolts &c. The plate 1 may extend to the flange 2, Fig. 10, and be welded thereto, together with the pieces 9. The plate 1 may be at right angles to the flange. The pieces 6, Fig. 12, or 10, Fig. 7, may be tapered with their largest width at the upper end, or may be shaped as shown in Fig. 14, the upper part being wedge shaped, Fig. 15.
