Abstract
612,433. Brake shoes and bands. McEACH. RAN, P. R. March 5, 1946, No. 6774. Convention date, Feb. 21, 1945. [Class 103 (i)] To permit ready replacement of the friction linings thereof, brake shoes or bands comprise two base members to each of which is slidably attached a friction member which normally abuts at one end on a shoulder on its base member and at the other end on the adjacent end of the other friction member, one at least of the base members being pivoted to or removable from a main support of both members or being pivoted to the other base member so that it can be moved to a position in which the friction members no longer abut on each other and so can be removed. The internal brake shoe shown in Fig. 2 comprises base members 2, 3 pivoted at 9 to a main support 1 and to each of which a friction member 4, 5 is slidably attached by longitudinal dovetail projections and grooves so that with the members 2, 3 in the position shown, the members 4, 5 can be removed. The members 4, 5 normally abut at one end on shoulders 8 and when the members 2, 3 are in their normal position lying along the support 1, the ends 4a, 5a abut on each other. The members 2, 3 are secured in the normal position by a bolt 14 which can be passed through lugs 13 and the support 1. In a modification, the members 2, 3 are sheet metal pressings. According to Fig. 8, one base member 3<SP>1</SP> is integral with the support 1<SP>1</SP> and the other 2<SP>1</SP> can be removed after an initial pivotal movement of the end 15<SP>1</SP> in a recessed lug 16<SP>1</SP> on the support 1<SP>1</SP>. Figs. 20, 24 show a shoe for a disc brake, in which base members 52 to which friction members 51 are slidably attached are hinged to a support 53 by bolts 54 and are held in the operative position shown by bolts passing through the support and through lugs 55 adapted to extend through openings in the support. A lug 59 receives a bar by which the shoe is applied to the brake disc. In the flexible external contracting type of friction device shown in Figs. 14, 15, base members, hinged together at 39 each comprise a number of laterally spaced circumferential strips 35 united by an eye member 37 at one end and by transverse corrugated strips 41 which form the dovetail slots for the attachment of the slidable friction members 42. Each strip 35 is formed with a hinge lug 38. The members 42 can be removed when one of the base members has been moved to such a position as that shown in broken lines. In a friction device of the type comprising a pair of shoes pivoted for contraction to engage a brake drum, each shoe comprises a pair of base members hinged together to permit the outer halves to be opened out for the removal of the friction liners. Each friction member may comprise a series of blocks abutting end to end or spaced.
