Abstract
611,505. Magnetrons. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Nov. 17, 1944, No. 22918. Convention date, Nov. 19, 1943. [Class 39 (i)] A cavity magnetron has alternate anode segments 22 shorter than the ones 23 between, segments 23 being connected to conductive end plates 24, 25 and segments 22 being spaced from the end plates so that each short segment forms the inner conductor of a quarter-wave coaxial line terminated at the end by cylindrical member 21, to which all the segments are connected. The member 21 forms the inner wall of a cylindrical resonator 30, which is coupled to each quarter-wave line by apertures 35, 36 placed alternately at the top and bottom, as shown in Fig. 6. The developed view of Fig. 5 shows that a master wave in resonator 30 of Eo type will produce a circumferential magnetic field coupled to consecutive quarter-wave lines in opposite directions, so that each short segment 22 is constrained to oscillate in anti-phase with its neighbours. Mode-changing is thereby eliminted. Magnetic inserts 26, 27, Fig. 4, co-operate with external polepieces 261, 271 and also support the indirectly-heated cathode 20. The resonator 30 is preferably dimensioned so that the ratio of its outer radius b to its inner radius a is greater than 2. A coupling loop 37 or a wave-guide removes energy from the system.
