Abstract

Metal surfaces are coated with a natural or synthetic wax, a grease or petroleum jelly by spraying by means of a pistol in which compressed air or gas is used to eject a stream of the material on to the surface in the presence of a corrosion inhibitor. The surface may be flamed during or after coating. Specified waxes are paraffin, ceresin, carnauba, candelilla and beeswax while specified corrosion inhibitors are oil-soluble petroleum sulphonates (e.g. the sodium or calcium salt alone or as a concentrate in oil), lanolin, wool grease, sodium nitrite or sodium benzoate. The material may be introduced into the pistol in solid, e.g. powder or candle, or liquid or pasty form and may be liquified in the pistol either by passing through or adjacent to a flame or by another method of heating, e.g. electric heating coil. Fillers such as sulphur, calcium carbonate, silica, zinc dust, cement and cement fondu may be present. The spraying may be done by the use of a "Schori" pistol.
