611,275. Coating webs. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and SOUTTER, R. R. April 26, 1946, No. 12619. [Class 140] Knitted or woven fabric to be coated with cellulose by passage through an aqueous bath of a regeneratable cellulose derivative such as viscose, followed by treatment with a coagulating agent, is treated with live steam immediately before immersion in the coating bath, to eliminate or reduce absorbed air and hence the occurrence of air bubbles in the final product: As shown a cotton fabric 1 passes over a fixed rod 2 down an entry shaft 3 into a steam chamber 4 where it is treated with live steam from jets 5, and thence down an exit shaft 6 into a viscose container 10 in which it passes around a freely mounted roller 13 and through centralising rods 14 to a screwadjusted exit slot 15. The steam chamber 4 and shafts 3 and 6 are surrounded by a steam-jacket 8 which is insulated from the viscose bath by a cork washer 12. The fabric enters the viscose bath at the apex of a projection 11 to avoid vortex formation. A constant level of viscose is maintained with the aid of a ball float 19 in a float chamber 18. The slot 15 may be temporarily widened by operating a lever 17 if it becomes obstructed by flock, or a slub on the fabric.
