[Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XXV] In a strand feeding machine, particularly a stranding or cabling machine, a stop motion device comprises a guide member 15 over which a strand W is fed in the direction of its length, an insulated electrical contact 13, Fig. 3, mounted adjacent thereto, and an S-shaped pivotally mounted contact arm 17 biassed by a spring 18 towards engagement with the fixed contact 13 engaged by the strand passing through one of the open loops of the " S " and held against its bias out of engagement with the fixed contact 13, so that on breakage or running out of the strand the movable contact 17 engages the fixed contact 13. An electric circuit is thus completed and may operate a signal device &c. or a switch for shutting off the power. Each strand is provided with such a control device and in the form shown they are applied to a typical stranding machine by mounting them on the disc-like end closure 2 thereof. This machine has a central, hollow, rotatable shaft 4 carrying a lay plate 5 with guides 6 for the strands W, the core C passing through the shaft 4 towards the die position D. To render any of the control devices inoperative, as when a smaller number of strands are being twisted than for the maximum number for the machine, the contact arm 17 may be locked out of engagement with the fixed contact by sliding it transversely on its pivotal support into an inwardly extending slot in an arm 20.
