Class 120(2) [Also in Groups XXII and XXV] A feed-out device for a threadlike element such as wire comprises a reel on which the wire is coiled and from which it is withdrawn, a movable guide member engaged by the wire as it is withdrawn, the tension in the wire tending to move the guide to a displaced position against spring biasing means, and cutter means normally clear of the guide but engaged by the wire, if the tension therein is sufficient to move the guide, to cut the wire. Wire 12 is pulled off a reel 3, over a crown member 6, which may be stationary, Fig. 1, or rotated by a belt 20 and sleeve 21, Fig. 2, around a guide sleeve 8 and through a tube 4 coaxial with the reel 3 to, for example, cable making apparatus. If tension in the wire 12 becomes excessive the wire pushes the sleeve 8 back against a spring 9 and is cut by a knife edge 7 on the now exposed end of the tube 4. Movement of the sleeve 8 is limited by a stud 11. A plate 17 pressed by a weak spring 18 towards the guide sleeve 8 controls the feed of the wire and a casing 14 hinged at 15 prevents ballooning thereof. Movement of the sleeve 8 may actuate switches to stop the apparatus by which the wire is taken up. A plurality of reels may feed to a cable twisting machine the crown members 6 all being rotated by a common drive belt 20 some in one direction for the formation of a six strand inner layer and others in the opposite direction for the formation of an oppositely twisted twelve strand outer layer. Insulated contact bars may be provided so that if wire breaks the loose end will drop on to a bar to stop the machine or operate a warning circuit for the particular reel involved.
