Abstract

Bile acid derivatives of the general formula R-COO(CH2)nNR1R2 where R-COOH represents a keto-bile acid (e.g. dehydrodesoxy- or dehydro-cholic acid, n is a small integer and R1 and R2 are alkyl groups or together form the residue of a heterocyclic group which include the N-atom in a ring are obtained by esterifying a keto bile acid with a dialkylamino (including piperidino and morpholino) alkyl alcohol or halide while removing the water or hydrogen halide formed from the reaction, e.g. by distillation or by carrying the reaction in the presence of a basic substance. Detailed examples are given.
