Abstract

Colloidal silver is made by treating a water-soluble silver salt in aqueous solution with a reducing agent in presence of a wetting agent having protective colloid properties. Silver nitrate, citrate, sulphamate, acetate, fluoride, sulphate or thiosulphate may be reduced with diphenyl carbazide, sodium hydrosulphite, sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate, hydrazine, p - hydroxy methylaniline sulphate - hydroquinone mixtures or 2.4-diaminophenol hydrochloride in presence of sodium dodecylsulphate, mannitan monolaurate, tri-isopropyl naphthalene sulphonic acid, condensation products of formaldehyde with naphthalene a - and b -sulphonic acids, sodium and potassium octadecyl and tetradecyl-sulphate, sodium and potassium n-decyl, n-dodecyl and n-hexadecyl sulphonic acids, the sodium and potassium salts of stearic, palmitic, lauric and oleic acids, dibutyl sodium succinate, diamyl sodium succinate and polyalkalene oxides containing the structural unit C2H4O. Colloids, e.g. gelatine, albumen, agar-agar, sodium gelatinate gelled polyvinyl alcohol, polyglycuronic acid, polymeric hydroxyalkanes or colour formers, e.g. polyvinyl acetals may be added to the dispersions. Examples describe the reduction of silver nitrate with diphenylcarbazide in water containing sodium dodecylsulphate, and with 2 : 4-diaminophenol hydrochloride in aqueous mannitan monolaurate.
