Abstract

610,743. Hosepipes; pipe joints. SAUN. DERS, P. K. April 15, 1946, No. 11538. Convention date, April 13, 1945. [Classes 99 (i) and 99 (ii)] A hose is made up of end sections and at least one intermediate section, each end section having at its outer end a'coupling in the form of a head which is provided with an opening having a removable closure, each end section at its inner end and each end of each intermediate section having a coupling member, adjacent members co-operating to make fluidtight connections, and each section having reinforcing means extending lengthwise thereof, the means being connected to the head and the coupling member of each end section and to each coupling member of an intermediate section. Fig. 1 shows such a hose intended for re-fuelling ships at sea. It comprises end sections 12, Fig. 2, and intermediate sections 11, Fig. 4, the end sections having heads 14 and the various sections being joined by coupling members 13. Each head comprises a tubular member 15, having an extension 16 lying within the hose 12, and an approximately conical member 23 formed with a neck 24, the opening of which can be closed by a cap 25 provided with an air valve 28. A bridge piece 21 is rigidly fixed to the tubular member 15, the member 23 being fixed to the member 15 by means of a rod 30 which threadingly engages the bridge piece. A towing eye 33 is attached to the outer end of the rod. Passing through diametrically opposed coned sockets in the bridge piece are cables 35 which provide the internal longitudinal reinforcement for the hose, the cables being fixed in the sockets by expanding the end strands and pouring molten metal among them. The other end of each endsection and each end of every intermediate section is provided with a male or female coupling member, Fig. 4, coupling being made by tightening a nut 48 so that the male member is pressed against packing 44 contained in. the female member 40. A guard ring 46 is provided on the male member and the male and female members are provided with diametrically opposed sockets 51, 41, respectively for receiving and rigidly supporting the ends of the cable reinforcement. Lugs and recesses are also formed on the members, these being so positioned that the coupling canonly be effected when each socket 41 is directly aligned with a socket 51.
