Abstract

610,355. Making nuts. WATSON, F. (Elastic Stop Nut Corporation of America). March 29, 1946, No. 9830. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXV] Flanging; jointing by stamping.-In the manufacture of self-locking nuts of the type in which an insert is secured in a recess in the main part of the nut with its thread out of lead relation, the main part is doubly counterbored at 28, 30, each counterbore ending in a bevelled surface. The end of the nut is turned down to form a taper sleeve which is flanged down on to the flange of the insert 30 by a conically concave punch 38, one punch serving for a range of nut sizes. The flange is notched at intervals at 36 to provide better locking against relative rotation. After tapping the nut and insert, the latter is displaced axially by a punch with a conical end 50, the internal diameter being greater than the root diameter of the thread so that no distortion of the thread itself occurs. A shoulder 48 on the punch brings the top 26 of the turned-over flange into a plane normal to the axis of the nut.
