Abstract

Mandelic acid derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0610198/IV(b)/1> (in which R is a phenyl or substituted phenyl group, R1 is hydrogen, an alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, alkaryl or a homocyclic group, R2 is a dialkylamino-alkyl or piperidinoalkyl group, R3 and R4 are alkyl groups or together form a polymethylene ring, and n is an integer not greater than 4) are prepared by reacting a dialkylamino-alkyl or piperidinoalkyl halide with an alkali metal derivative of an ester of an a -hydroxy carboxylic acid of the formula <FORM:0610198/IV(b)/2> (in which X is hydrogen or the dialkylaminoalkyl or piperidinoalkyl group, and Y is the dialkylaminoalkyl or piperidinoalkyl group or hydrogen, respectively). In a modification, an alkali metal derivative of an ester of the general formula <FORM:0610198/IV(b)/3> (in which Y1 is an alkyl group) is hydrolyzed with an alkali metal hydroxide and the salt so formed is reacted with a dialkylaminoalkyl or piperidinoalkyl halide. Examples are given of the preparation of (1) and (4) the b -dimethylaminoethyl ether of diethylaminoethyl benzilate; (2) the b -dimethylaminoethyl ether of b -dimethylaminoethyl benzilate, and (3) the b -dimethylaminoethyl ether of b -piperidinoethyl benzilate.
