Abstract

Phenoxyacetic acids of the Formula I, wherein R2 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical, R3 represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or a C1- 5 alkyl, C1- 5 alkox or trifluoromethyl radical or two R3 radicals on adjacent carbon atoms of the benzene ring form a 1,3-butadienylene linkage, and m represents an integer from 1 to 4, are prepared by reacting phenoxyacetic acids of the Formula II, where Y represents a -CO2R, -CON(R1)2 or -CN radical wherein R represents a univalent organic radical comprised solely of carbon and hydrogen, R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1- 5 alkyl radical or, taken together, both R1 radicals and the nitrogen atom to which they are attached represent a 1-pyrrolidinyl, piperidino or morpholino radical, with compounds of the formula R2-C(: CH2)M, where M represents a magnesium halide radical or a lithium atom, and hydrolysing the resulting intermediates. The free bases are converted into salts by reaction with bases forming non-toxic pharmacologically acceptable cations. <FORM:1074197/C2/1> [4 - Imino - 2 - methylenepropyl)phenoxy] acetic acid is formed as an intermediate in an example of the above process by the reaction of 2-propenyl-magnesium chloride on 4-cyanophenoxyacetic acid. Phenoxyacetic acids of the Formula II may be prepared by converting an hydroxy-benzoic acid to its amide, nitrile or ester and reacting the latter with a 2-haloacetic acid.
