Abstract
609,402. Control means for the wheel brakes of aircraft; steering. HELLINGS, G. M. March 13, 1946, No. 7813. [Class 4] In a control system for the wheel brakes of aircraft the total braking effort is determined by the rotary movement in the same sense of two foot pedals, while the distribution of the effort between port and starboard wheel brakes for steering on the ground is determined by the position of the rudder-bar or other flight-steering control. As shown, two pedals 13, 14 mounted for rotation about an axis 10 relatively to the rudder-bar 11, itself rotatable about an axis 12, serve to press a roller 16 downwardly against a link 17 operating fluid pressure master cylinders 20, 21 for the port and starboard wheel brakes respectively. The mean pressure in the cylinders 20, 21 is determined by the pressure on the pedals 13, 14, while the ratio of the pressures is determined by the position of the rudder-bar 11. A modification is described in which the steering control comprises swinging rudder links instead of a rudder bar and in which the position of the two pedals controlling the mean braking force varies as the swinging rudder links move so as always to conform to the natural position of the pilot's feet. The brake transmission may be mechanical or electrical, instead of hydraulic.
