Abstract

609,205. Rotary engines. LIPSCOMB, R., APPLETON, E. V., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 15, 1943, No. 2511. [Class 110 (ii)] Flexible plates 3a-3f are fixed at one end by bolts 4 and spacers 5 and lie along the length of a chamber 20 with a small clearance between their edges and the side walls of the chamber. Wave-like motions are induced in the plates and the motions of adjacent plates are in phase opposition, so that a fluid introduced at 21 is carried along in travelling chambers between the plates towards an outlet 22. To induce the wave motions, plates 3a, 3c and 3e are secured to rods 7, 8, 9, 10 and plates 3b, 3d and 3f, to rods 11, 12, 13, 14 and the rods are given harmonic motions in appropriate phases by means of eccentrics 18 on shafts 19. Each shaft 19 carries three similar eccentrics operating three rods 7 &c. which are spaced apart across the width of the plates. The rods 7 &c. pass freely through the plates to which they are not secured. The rods 7 are sealed to the casing by metallic bellows 15. In a modification, there is only one shaft 19 and the plates are energized by rods such as 7 in one transverse line. To secure that the wave amplitude should be constant as the waves travel toward the free end of the plates, the plates are suitably reduced in width or thickness in that direction.
