Abstract

1,112,264. Rotary pumps and motors. J. VANSTEENE. Nov. 22, 1965 [Nov. 20, 1964], No. 49542/65. Heading F1F. A rotary hydraulic or pneumatic pump or motor of the gyratory rotor type, comprises a cylindrical stator 1, Fig. 1, within which a rotor 2 rotatable about its own axis a in one direction is constrained to rotate about the axis A of the stator in the opposite direction by means of rotatable cheekplates (not shown) on which the rotor is carried and a mechanical drive. A flexible substantially inextensible strip 3, connected at one end to the stator and at its other end to the rotor is sealed at its edges between the cheek-plates to define with the cheek-plates, stator and rotor a chamber C which cyclically increases and decreases in volume as the rotor rotates. In operation as a motor, admittance of pressure fluid to the chamber C causes a tension T in the strip 3 to generate an anticlockwise moment TR on the rotor 2 which is resisted by a clockwise moment Tr to develop a motive couple, neglecting friction of T(R-r) on an output shaft, where r and R are the radii of the rotor and rotor orbit respectively. As shown in Fig. 6, a hollow rotor 12 is rotatably mounted in cheek-plates 17 which are in turn rotatably mounted in a stator 11 and a strip 13 sealingly engaging at its edges the cheek-plates is connected to the stator and rotor to define a chamber C to which fluid is admitted to and discharged from through ports 14, 15 in the hollow rotor. The mechanical drive causing the rotor to rotate about its own axis in one direction and the axis of the stator in the opposite direction comprises sprockets 20, 21 fixed to the rotor 12 and stator 11 respectively and a sprocket chain 19. Gearing or any other suitable drive could be used. A practical construction of the invention is described with reference to Figs. 7 to 10 (not shown). In this construction, the rotor is mounted on two eccentric bearings to permit movement of the rotor towards or away from the internal surface of the stator. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), three strips are anchored to the stator and rotor at spaced apart angular positions to define three chambers to which fluid is sequentially admitted to and discharged from to produce a more regular motive couple or more regular pump output. One cheek-plate may be made relatively displaceable with respect to the other to take up wear. It is stated that the device may operate as an I. C. engine. The strips may be covered with material such as tetra fluoroethylene to mitigate against friction and ensure sealing between the strips and the cheek-plates.
