Abstract

609,053. Cartridge magazines. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES SOC. ANON. March 5, 1946, No. 6758. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1945. [Class 92 (ii)] Relates to cartridge magazines for automatic firearms having a portion near the outlet of variable capacity to take up the sudden movement as each cartridge leaves the magazine and allow a substantially continuous movement of the remaining cartridges. According to the invention, a cartridge magazine is provided in which the portion of variable capacity is of variable cross-section. A box-type magazine body 11 ends in a mouth 13 adapted for cooperation with the breech-block 15 of a firearm. Near the mouth 13, the magazine has an enlarged portion 16, the walls 17 of which are apertured for the passage of levers 18 pivoted at 19 and acted on by springs 20. A follower 21 acted on by a spring 22 urges the cartridges 12 towards the outlet 13 and in so doing tends to urge apart the levers 18 against the action of springs 20. Stops 24 limit the outward movement of said levers. As the leading cartridge 23 is fed into the firearm the levers 18 move together and so urge the foremost cartridges towards the breech, the follower 21 meanwhile sets all the cartridges in motion and so forces the levers 18 apart again. Modifications are described in one of which the portion of the magazine having variable capacity is of arcuate form. It is also stated that instead of using levers 18, the walls of the portion 16 may be of flexible material acted on by resilient means. In an arcuate form, the inner and outer walls may change in radius and length.
