Abstract

Monoethylenic compounds are polymerized alone or together in the presence of an oxygen-liberating polymerization catalyst, water and/or other associated hydroxylated liquid having a molecular weight up to 61 such as methanol or ethanol, and as catalyst promoter a polyvalent metal compound in a reduced state. Monomers specified are vinyl acetate, formate, butyrate and benzoate, vinyl cyanide, vinylidene and vinyl chlorides, methyl methacrylate, styrene, vinyl allyl ethers and ketones, methacrylic acid, chloracrylic acid, and esters and nitriles of acrylic acid and its derivatives. Metal compounds specified are ferrous sulphate, ferrous ammonium sulphate and compounds of vanadium, copper, cobalt, nickel, lead, tin, titanium, and cerium. Catalysts specified are tert-butyl hydroperoxide, peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, sodium perborate, peroxide and percarbonate and ammonium persulphate. The metal compounds may be obtained in situ, using a reducing agent of which many are listed, e.g. ketones, aldehydes, sulphites, sulphoxylates and sulphinic acids, aldoses, pinene, pyrogallol, acetoacetates, ascorbic acid and propylene oxide. If contaminating amounts of the metal compounds are present, complex-forming ions may be added, e.g. sodium tartrate. The catalyst may be added in increments. Specification 590,191 is referred to.
