Abstract

One or more monoethylenic organic compounds are polymerized in the presence of a compound having the grouping <FORM:0607734/IV(a)/1> and a water soluble inorganic peroxy compound dissolved in a non-acidic hydroxylated associated diluent of molecular weight not over 61, the said diluent being present in an amount at least equal to the weight of the monoethylenic substances. Monomers specified are ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, the nitriles and amides of acrylic and methacrylic acids, styrene, chlorstyrenes, vinyl acetate and higher esters, vinyl chloride and bromide, and vinylidene chloride. Modifiers such as fumaric and maleic esters, and trichlorethylene may be added. Specified compounds having the grouping <FORM:0607734/IV(a)/2> are ascorbic, isoascorbic, and dihydroxy maleic acid. Diluents specified are water, methanol, ethanol and isopropanol, and as inorganic peroxy-compound, hydrogen peroxide, potassium percarbonate, sodium perborate, ammonium or sodium persulphate may be used. The process may be carried out in an inert gas, and if water is used as diluent, borax and sodium polymethacrylate may be added. Films, foils, fibres, adhesives and mouldings may be made with the polymers. Plasticizers, pigments, fillers, dyes, natural and synthetic resins may be added before or after the polymerization.
