Abstract

607,558. Motorised cycles. THORNTON, A. C. Feb. 8, 1946, No. 3978. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] In an auto-cycle, drive is transmitted from a fixed engine and/or gear-box to the outer, inner or side of the road wheel or tyre adjacent the periphery thereof by means of an endless flexible V-belt adapted to contact an arc of the wheel or tyre. The belt may pass round a driving or a driven pulley, the latter being spring-loaded to maintain belt tension and mounted for adjustment about the axis of the driving pulley for separating the V-belt from the wheel or tyre to interrupt the drive. As shown, the engine 1 is mounted rigidly by brackets 8 and 16, and is provided with clutch 2, driving and driven pulleys 4, 5 embraced by an endless V-belt 3 which frictionally engages the periphery of the tyre over an arc. The driven pulley 5 is mounted on a spring-loaded arm 20 which maintains belt tension, the arm 20 being pivoted to a lever 21, 25 pivoted at 22 and spring biassed to keep the belt in contact with the tyre, a handle 26 being provided for swinging the belt clear of the tyre when desired. The belt and pulleys may be provided with a cover 11 which comprises a fuel tank 13 and part of the mudguard 12. The pulleys may have slots 29 in their flanges to permit the escape of any dirt or water which might get under the belt.
