Abstract
Brominated phenones are prepared by treating an acetophenone or a propiophenone substituted in the phenyl ring by one or more methoxy, ethoxy or benzyloxy groups with bromine in the presence of methyl alcohol as a solvent. In a preferred way of carrying the invention into effect the phenone is dissolved in 5-20 parts by weight of methyl alcohol and bromine either in liquid form or dissolved in methyl alcohol is added slowly with constant stirring at such a rate that the colour of the reaction mixture is not darker than a medium orange shade. The reaction mixture is preferably cooled as the reaction proceeds, the reaction having been started by the addition of a few drops of hydrochloric or other non-oxidizing acid. When the bromination is over the reaction mixture is diluted with water to cause crystallization of the product. Examples are given of the preparation by the method of the invention of the following brominated phenones (1) 2 : 5-dimethoxy-a -bromo-acetophenone. (2) 2-Methoxy-5-methyl-a -bromoacetophenone. (3) a -Bromacetoveratrone. (4) 2-Methoxy-5-methyl-a -bromopropiophenone. (5) 2 : 6 - Dimethoxy - a - bromopropiophenone. (6) 2 : 5 - Diethoxy - a - bromacetophenone.
