Abstract
Nitrogenous bases are prepared by treating a primary aromatic amine, preferably dissolved in a solvent immiscible with water, with more than two molecular proportions of formaldehyde under neutral or alkaline conditions and, if desired, isolating the product of the reaction while avoiding a high temperature. Preferably, the amine is added slowly to the formaldehyde. The product, which on standing or in solution in aqueous alcohol decomposes into free formaldehyde and anhydroformaldehydeaniline, may be used in pharmacy or in the preparation of artificial masses. In examples, a solution of aniline or p-toluidine in benzene is dropped, while stirring, into a mixture of aqueous formaldehyde, sodium carbonate and benzene to yield a product which will decompose into formaldehyde and the corresponding anhydroformaldehydeamine.
