Abstract

605,917. Folding ladders. SALAMON, M. Jan. 29, 1947, No. 3080/46. [Class 20(ii)] A folding ladder comprises a number of rungs 2 having sides links 1 pivoted to them, each pair of links other than the end links being longer and further apart than the adjacent links on one side of them and shorter and closer together than the adjacent links on the other side so that the links can nest together as in Fig. 2. The links are straight sided, thus minimising the thickness of the ladder when folded, and when in use the ladder may be spaced from a neighbouring wall surface by two pairs of additional links, one pair 5 being pivoted to the top rung of the ladder and the other pair 7 hinged to the links 5, having slotted ends 7a to engage the next lower rung. For the attachment of the upper end of the ladder a bar 4 on short links 3 is provided to engage hooks inside a room in a building. Fixing chains may also be attached to the bar 4 or the bar made extendable to engage across the inside of a window opening. Alternatively, the top rung may be extendable for this purpose. The rungs are rigid but may have substantial resilience, e.g. be made from metal strip, and may be serrated. The side links are preferably rigid also.
