FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 727,170, dated May 5, 1993.
Application filed March 2, 1903.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS MAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes, of. which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements: in fire-escapes; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts more fully set forth in the specification and point-' ed out in the claim.
The invention relates to a class of folding fire-escapes which may be suspended from the sill of a window of a burning building.
The object of my invention is to construct a fire-escape of the type referred to which may be made light, compact, desirable, and can be unfolded in a minimum amount of time. 7 V
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device in its unfolded position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, the wall of the house below the window-frame being in section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation.
Referring to the drawings, S represents the inner sill of a window-frame F, the edge 'of the sill being gripped by the hooks H of the fire-escape. are connected by straps 1 t0 the rung or bar Serial N0.' 1f&5,72. (N0 model.)
The outer ends of the hooks H 2; from each end of which depend a pair of cables 3 3, which are passed through corresponding pairs of openings at opposite ends of the platforms or steps 4, each step resting on a knot 3", tied in the cable immediately below the step. At a point immediately above each step the cables 3 are seized or tied by a band 5. The whole canbe unfolded or folded at a moments notice, as apparent from the drawings.
Having described my invention, what I claim is} A fire-escape comprising a series of plat- ,forms or steps, cables passed-inpairs through the opposite ends of the platforms, lknots tied in the cables below each platform, bands seizing each pair of cables above eachplatform, hooks for engaging the inner sill of the win- ,dow-frame, straps carried by the hooks, and abar connected to said hooks by the straps, the upper ends of the pairs of cables being coupled to the bar, substantially as set forth. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, THOMAS MAY.
