SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,615, dated April 30, 1895.
Application filed February 14:, 1895. Serial No. 538,347. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: other section, (1. At its center this cross rod Be it known that I, THOMAS J. LINDSAY, a has an eye, h, to which the lowering cord or citizen of the United States, residing at Balrope, 2', is made fast. timore, in the State of Maryland, have in- It will be seen that the cross rod,f, is so en- 5 vented certain'new and useful Improvements gaged with the two jointed hoop-sections that in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a when suspended from the lowering rope it is specification. impossible for the said jointed hoop to fold on This invention relates to a portable fire ts joi ts, escape, for use in private residences and ho- The clip or saddle, J, sets astride of the win- 1o tels and which is adapted to be folded comdow-sill K, and has an eye, Z, with which 011- pactly so as to occupy but little space and adgages the link or eye, m, of a pulley-block, n, mit of being carried with wearing apparel in and the rope, 2', passes over the pulley in this an ordinary traveling trunk. block.
The invention is illustrated in the accom- It will be seen that the basket or cage, A, 15 panying drawings,in whichmay, at the outset, be quite close to the win- Figure l is an elevation showing a section dow-sill and thus render it comparatively easy of a wall of a house and illustrating the imfor a person in the window to take position in proved fire-escape as itappears when attached the basket, and when once in the basket the to a window-sill. Fig. 2 is a view, on a large person may lower himself by paying out the 20 scale, of the adjustable clip or saddle for winrope Which is coiled in the basketdow-sills. Fig. 3 shows the outside jointed The clip or saddle, J, may be an integral prong of the clip or saddle. Fig. 4 is a view piece having two p g 0, 2 as in gof a clip or saddle for the window-sill, in which t may be, and by. preference is, both jointed the prongs are rigid. and adjustable, as in Fig.2. The form shown 25 The fire escape comprisesa folding basket in this figure has the outer prong, 0, connected or cage; an improved clip or saddle to take with the top or saddle bar bya knuckle-joint, astride of a window sill; and a pulley and q, to enable it to fold and take position parcord connecting between the said basket and ailel with said top or saddle bar. It is 0, and limits its outward movement, and, secslightly tapering, being smaller at the bottom, 0nd, for the attachment of the link or eye, m, and pieces of thin board, b, may be placed in of the pulley-block. The prong, p, which takes the basket upon the bottom and serve for a on the inner side of the window sill, is made 8 3 5 person to stand on. The top edge of this basadjustable on the top or saddle bar. This ket has attached to it a jointed hoop, C. The prong has at its upper end a slot, 7', through hoop is made in two sections, d, d, united at which the said top bar passes loosely 0 ydiametrical points by knuckle joints, e, placed The top bar has a number of holes, 8, and a with the knuckle or stop part, 6', of the pin,t, passed down into any one of sai holes 0 joint upward. By this construction the two enables the prong, p, to be set or adjusted sections, d, d, of the hoop may tilt at the cenalong the top bar to suitor fit on walls inter and both sections turn down toward the dew sills of different thicknesses. bottom of the basket, but cannot tilt from To fold up this fire escape and put it the the center upward. A rod, f, extends diamost compact form,tl1e cross-rod, f, of the bas- 5 metrically across the top of the basket in a ket hasits end unhooked, the top hoop is folded transverse direction with respect to the two on the joints, e, and then the flexible basket joints, e, and the ends of the cross rod conis closely folded. The clip or saddle has the nect with or engage the two hoop-sections,d, inner prong, p, slipped off and the outer prong, d. This rod,f, has one end jointed or hinged, 0, folded. These parts are then laid with the no 50 as at f, to one section, (1, and the other end folded basket and coiled rope.
has a hook, f which engages an eye, g, on the Instead of a cross-rod, f, connecting the two hoop-sections at points which are on a line in a transverse direction with respect tothe said two joints, it is obvious the lowering rope itself may be so connected to the two sections, 0r a separate piece of rope or chain may extend across.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a fire escape, the combination of a-saddle having two prongs to set astride of a window-sill and provided with an eye for attachment of a pulley; abasketcomposedof flexible material; a hoop made in two sections united by a knuckle joint with the stop part of the joint upward-said hoop attached to the has joint upward -said hoop attached to the basket; and a rod extending diametrically across the top of the basket in a transverse direction with respect to said joints and the two ends of said rod engaged with the two hoop-sections.
3. Ina fire escape, the combination of a folding adjustable saddle bar to-sit horizontally upon a window sill, an outer prong, 0, adapted to engage the outer side of the sill and jointed to the outer end of the saddle bar so as to fold parallel with the under side of said bar, another prong, q, to engage the inner side of the sill and having a slot through which the saddle bar is adjustable, and a clown-curved eye also on the outer end of the bar and serving as a stop to limit the outward swing of said jointed prong; a pulley block suspended from said'eye; a basket; and a lowering rope passed over the pulley and attached to the basket.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS J. LINDSAY.
