JOHN G. HEARNE AND DUSTON ADAMS, OF PLEASANT HILL, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT m EXTENSIBLE LADDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 37,679, dated April 8,1873; application filed March 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OHN G. HEARNE and DUsToN ADAMS, of Pleasant Hill, in the county of Cass and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Folding Ladder, of which .the following is a specification:
Our invention consists of two lazy-tongs contrivanees connected together at the middle joints of the bars by cross-bars long enough for the ordinary purposes of the cross-bars of a commonladder,thecross-barsbeing connected, near each end, by cords, which limit the extension of thelazy-ton gs frame, and support the weight of the climber, the top cross bar being provided with hooks or other devices for suspendin g the ladder, and a rope being attached to and passed from the lower cross-bar up over the top one, or through an eye suspended from it, so that the ladder can be folded up out of the way by pulling the cord down; and it can be quickly let down when the ladder is required for use by releasing the rope, which is made fast to some object for holding the ladder up. The whole constitutes a convenient and efficient ladder for scuttles and the like,
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
A representsthelazy=ton gs frames 5 B, the oonmeeting-rounds or cross-bars 5 G, the ropes connectingthe said crossbars; I), the hooks on the top cross bar for suspending it from overhead; E, the rope attached to the lower cross bar and passed over the top one, or through an eye down to the lower part again for folding the ladder up out of the way, as shown in Fig. 2.
Thus we provide a simple, efficient, and convenient folding-ladder, which we can suspend from a scuttle or any other like place, all ready for use, except the unfolding and folding it up out of the way in that part of the room below that may be desired for use.
Having thus described our invention, .we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the two lazy tongs frames A, cross-bars B, ropes O, rope E, and suspending-hooks or other devices D, the rope E being attached to the lower cross-bar, passing up over the top one, or through an eye, and down again, all substantially as specified.
JOHN (J. HEARNE.
