Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEe HENRY FULLER, OF FRANKLIN, OHIO.
FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.I 226,449, dated April 13,1880.
Application filed September 27, 1879.
1o reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a iront view. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a view showing the escape folded in position, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the hook or clamp by which it is secured to the sill.
Corresponding parts in the several gures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to Jrire-escapes; and
zo it consists in certain improvements in the construction ofthe same, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly' pointed out in the claim.
The ladder to which my improvement is ap- 2 5 plied consists oi' any suitable number of sections, A A, hinged together by straps B B, turning upon bolts at the upper and lower ends of the sides ofthe several adjoining sections. The uppermost section is bolted or 3o otherwise suitably secured in a safe and permanent manner toa cross-bar, O, which is detachably secured to the sill of one of the upper windows in the house where the escape is placed by hooks or clamps D, (shown in detail in Fig. 4,) by reference to which it will be seen that each of said clamps consists of a strap of stout metal bent into the shape of two hooks or bails joined at right angles to each other, one of said hooks being tted over 4o the top cross-bar, C, while the other is hooked over the sill or into staples provided for the purpose.
The sides of the several adjoining sections are provided with hooks E, by which they may be connected, so as to keep the ladder steady during operation. The lowermost section is also provided with hooks F, by which it may be attached to some suitable point, if it should be necessary to draw and hold the ladder away from the Windows ofthe burning building.
I provide every other section of the ladder with a rope, G, reaching to the window where the escape is attached. By these ropes the ladder may be easily let down or hoisted up. A hook, H, at the top of the upper section may be hooked over the upper rung of the' lower section, thereby keeping the ladder in position when hoisted.
The simplicity of this improved lire-escape renders it easily accessible in time of fire. It is simple and strong, and it may, if desired, be controlled by a system of ropes in such a manner as to be operated by a person upon the ground or at one of the lower windows, as well as at the window where the escape is attached.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot the United States- In combination with a lire-escape ladder consisting of several sections hinged together, the ropes Gr, connected to the top'ruug of every second section and reaching to the window at which the escape is attached, as se forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
HENRY FULLER.
