Application filed July 29, 1925.
This invention relates to improvements in ladders, the general object being to provide an emergency ladder for use as a fire escape and which may be readily and easily folded into a very compact space and yet be readily and easily applicable to a window sill whereby the user may have a quick as cape from a burning building.
Another object of my invention resides .in the provision of the attaching or suspending means for the ladder which may be rig idly or detachably secured to some portion of a. building adjacent the windows thereof whereby the said ladder may readily and easily be applied thereto.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.

l'leferring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, thereference character 10 indicates hook members which are so constructed as to be readily and easily applicable upon a window sill, and are each shown as being made in the formation of an L or L-shaped in order that the offset portion thereof may lie flush with the upper side of the window sill while its short extension engages the inner side thereof and the remaining long arm formed thereon extends outwardly and downwardly on the outer side of the building, as clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing. lhe rungs 11 have their opposite end portions secured to the corresponding inner sides of the hooks 10 in order that steps may thus be provided upon. the said hooks 10 for the escape of the fire trapped victims.

so that the ladder may be lengthened and completed, I provide a plurality of relatively short ladder sections in the form of spaced parallel vertically disposed standards 12 having rungs 13 correspondingly mounted within their inner sides while U- bolts 14 have their respective end portions journaled or pivoted within the meeting end portions of the standards 12 with the lower ends of the L-shaped hooks 10 and the corresponding and consecutive ladder sections whereby the same may be pivoted together and extending through plates 15 upon theinner sides of the ladder sections and across the meeting ends thereof while fastening elements in the form of nuts 16 are secured upon the inner free ends of the U-bolts lwhereby the said ladder sections are held against accidental displacement.
As clearly illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawing the said ladder sections may be folded one upon the other, the U-bolts 14 forming the hinged or pivotal connections between the respective ladder sections and the said sections, as illustrated, may be folded beneath and within the Lshaped hooks 10 thus forming a frame or enclosure for the said folded ladder sections whereby the said emergency or fire exit ladder may be thus placed in a minimum space adjacent a window and be readily and easily applicable to a window for the escape of the fire trapped victims.
In Figure 5 of the drawing I have illustrated a modified form of my invention which contemplates correspondingly shaped and interconnected ladder sections having standards 12 rungs 13 and U-bolts 14 forming the hinged connection between the respective meeting end portions of the standards 12, as in the similar instance of the form of my invention as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive. The characteristic departure in this form of my invention from the first form, as described and illustrated, is in the provision of standards 15 having their lower ends correspondingly secured to the upper free ends of the first ladder section and further including a rung 16 between their inner sides while rings 17 are provided upon the upper free ends of the said standards 15. Leading from a common ring 18 are chains 19 having their respective end portions connected to the rings 17 while the upper common ring 18 is fitted upon and supported by a member 20 which is within :the outer Wall of a building adcent a window and which may always be applied thereto whereby the said common ring 18 may be readily and easily placed thereon for supporting the plurality of ladder sections thus hingedly connected and supported upon the lower ends of the stand ards 15 in the completing of the ladder, as described and illustrated.
