This invention relates to safety attachments for ladders and an object of the invention is to provide a device to take all strain and weight of scaffolding from the 5 rungs of the ladder, and apply the strain and weight on the stiles thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment for ladders that keeps the ladder out from the wall and enables the 10 painter to place his ladder jacks and plank on the very top of the stile, giving the workman full benefit of the wall, with no interference with the latter sticking up above the plank and thereby eliminating ladder marks on the sides of the building being painted or otherwise treated.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment for ladders that can be laid on the roof over the ridgeboard, whereby the ladder will be secure and safe while painting roofs at street pitch, and furthermore to provide an attachment to prevent breaking of the rungs of the ladder, which causes most of painters accidents.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of the character referred to, which is strong, and simple, compact and durable, and thoroughly reliable for its intended purpose, very simple in its method of assembly, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and operate.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated.
In the accompanying drawings, there is disclosed an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the claims hereto appended.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 represents a building wall and 6 indicates the stiles of a ladder resting against the wall 5. The stiles 6 are connected together in spaced relation by rungs 7. As illustrated 8 indicates a plank that extends longitudinally along the wall 5, having a jack 9 engaged with the outer, longitudinal edge of the plank 8, the inner end of the jack 9 being detachably engaged with the rungs 7 of the ladder.
The inner longitudinal edge of the plank S is adapted to rest upon the attachment indicated generally at 10, which is formed in accordance with the present invention.

On the inner ends of the leg 13 of each bracket 7 are inwardly directed flanges 14 that restrict the opening between the legs 13 and 15 of each bracket to prevent the said brackets from slipping off the respective stiles of the ladder. I
Projecting laterally from the flanged legs 13 of each bracket, there extend prongs 16 formed of a strapped strip of metal, bent to a substantially triangular shape. The base of the prongs 16 are rigidly secured to the legs 8 13 of the brackets 11, 12 while the apices 18 project laterally and are adapted to engage the wall 5.
A pair of brackets of U-shaped configuration 19, 20 are secured to the legs 15 and project therefrom to receive the opposite ends of a bar 21. The ends of the bar are threaded as at 22 to receive caps 23 so that the bar 21 will be prevented from sliding out of the clamps 19, 20. The inner edge of the plank 8 is adapted to rest upon the bar 21.
In the event the device is to be used in painting roofs, the sides of the prongs are disposed on the ridgeboard to support the adder in flush relation to the roof.
