Be it known that I, MARTIN CODY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Escape, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to fire-escapes of the portable spar and tower class; and its object is to provide a new and improved portable lire-escape which is simple and durable in construction, readily placed in position on a building, provided with a convenient descending means, especially serviceable for supporting women, children, invalids, and other persons, and arranged to insure a safe descent from any floor of the building to the sidewalk.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. at. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse section of the fastening device for securing the window cross-beam to the support, and Fig. 6 is a sectional side elevation of a modified form of the stay-rod for the support of the upper end of the ladder.
On the upper end of a ladder A is secured a transversely-extending support B, carrying on its free end a cross-beam 0, adapted to rest against the side of a building D, as shown in the drawings, and on the said support 13 is secured a depending hook E, on which is suspended the upper sheave F of a rope and tackle F of any approved construction, and carrying at its lower sheave F a basket G, so that the basket extends between the ladder and the face of the building to allow convenient raising and lowering of the basket by the operator actuating a Windlass H, held on the lower end of one of the side beams of the ladder, on which Windlass winds and unagain ready for hoisting and taking down an- 7 other load of personsdesiring to escape from the building in case of fire. The basket G is very roomy, so that alarge number of persons can be accommodated ata time, and, if necessary, a fireman or other person can be raised in the basket from the sidewalk up to a window to assist in the escape of persons from the building and also to save property, if desired. The support B is mortised in the upper ends of the side beams of the ladder A, and a bolt I is passed through the support and the beams of the ladder to securely fasten the support in position on the upper ends of the side beams. In order to give the desired strength to the support B, one of the upper rungs of the ladder is connected by braces J with the free end of the support 13, each brace J being preferably made in sections connected with each other by a turnbuckle, as plainly indicated in the drawings, to allow of adjusting the braces to insure proper bracing of the support from the ladder. Stay-rods K connect the upper rung of the ladder with the outer end of the support B to increase the supporting strength of the support B. The stay-rods K may be provided with extensions K engaging another rung of the ladder, as plainly illustrated in Fig. (3. The cross-beam O is fastened by bolts 0 to U-shaped clips B, attached by bolts B to the free end of the support 13, as plainly indicated in Fig. 5, and by this arrangement cross-beams O of different lengths may be employed to extendacross windows of more than ordinary width.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the fire-escape is very simple and durable in construction, and as it is portable it can be readily moved along a burning building to the different windows to allow of rescuing persons from everypart of the building. The

2. A portable fire-escape provided with a ladder, an abutting support secured on the upper end of the ladder, U-shaped clips em-- bracing the inner end of said support and secured thereto, and a transverse bar secured to said inner end of the support through the medium of said clips, the ends of said transverse bar projecting beyond the sides of the support, as specified and for the purpose set forth.
3. A portable fire-escape provided with a ladder, a hoisting-and-lowering device, an abutting support from which the said device is suspended, the support being mortised in the upper ends of the side beams of the ladder, braces connecting an upper rung with the support, stay-rods connecting the upper rung of the ladder with the outer end of the support, and a cross-beam bolted to the inner free end of the support, as set forth.
