Abstract

605,424. Feeding sheets. BACKHOUSE, H. T. Dec. 21, 1945, No. 34814. [Class 100(i)] In a sheet-feeding apparatus in which the pile is carried by a board 1 raised automatically by bars 3 carried by chains 4, and auxiliary raising means such as racks 6, 8 are provided to continue the feed while another board is supplied to the bars 3, the pile board 1 is transferred as a whole, with the sheets carried thereby to the auxiliary raising means. The rack 6 is fitted with a detachable bar 5 for engaging the rear end of the board 1, and the racks 8 are fitted with spring-pressed pawls 7 which can move past the board 1 when moving downwards but engage the board when moving upwards. The bar 5 may be replaced by a pivoted bar 17, Fig. 2, which acts similarly to the pawls 7. The chains 4 are driven by sprockets on shafts 15a driven by worm gearing from ratchet mechanism 27 shown in Fig. 6, and an associated ratchet 29 drives by worm gearing pinions 11 for operating the racks 6, 8. The ratchets are fitted with shields 30, 31 for the operating pawls 26, 29, Fig. 6, and a lever 36 which operates the shields can be set in one of three positions which cause both pawls to be inoperative, or either pawl to operate. The lever mechanism for operating the pawls is controlled by a feeler resting on the pile, and a shield continues to prevent operation of the ratchet so long as the pile does not need replenishing.
