[Class 100 (i)] The sheet-feeding apparatus described in the parent Specification in which a pile of sheets is advanced automatically to feed position by chains fitted with bars 2 for supporting the pile, and secondary chains are provided for feeding a new pile into position without disconnection of the feed is modified by substituting for the secondary chains thrust members such as screws 10 and nuts 9 to which are attached supporting bars 6 on which rests laths 7 for supporting the pile. Also instead of controlling the driving means for the screws 10 automatically by feelers a variable speed member 14 may be used to drive them at a speed which is set to synchronize with the automatic feed. Such a variable gear may comprise a ratchet mechanism, Fig. 5, comprising a pawl 20 oscillated from the fed machine and adapted to drive either freely mounted outer ratchet 17, or. when permitted by a deep groove 18, an innerratchet 16. Also when desired a mask 19 may be adjusted to allow the pawl to engage the ratchet earlier or later in its stroke and so adjust the ratchet action. The bars 6 and laths 7 may be replaced by a plate which is directly attached to the secondary'chains or thrust members. The bars 6 may be pivoted to the thrust members in such a way that as the laths are raised the bars are tripped aside and then return to engage the laths automatically. The primary chains may also be replaced by thrust members, and these may be in the form of racks engaged by pinions.
