828,436. Feeding sheets; sheet delivery apparatus. HOLMES, A. H., HOLMES, F., and HOLMES, A. L. Nov. 5. 1956 [Aug. 5, 1955], No. 22537/55. Class 100(1) A sheet pile raising or lowering device for use with a printing, cutting or scoring machine comprises vertical driven chain transmission means having rollers in a horizontal plane engaged by seats in carriers which support the pile table. As shown the machine includes a pile table 5, sheet separators 9, a feed table 10, a vertical platen and travelling impression cylinder 2 and an endless conveyer 24 for delivering the printed sheets to a delivery table 6. The tables 5 and 6 are raised and lowered respectively as the sheets are .printed, the actuating mechanism being similar in both cases. The tables are supported on four endless chains 42 running over sprockets 36, 38. The chains are provided with rollers 45 for supporting a carrier 46 fastened to bars 47 on which the table rests. The drive for the delivery table 6 and conveyer 24 is derived from a crank 12 which causes reciprocation of a link 13 attached to one end of a bellcrank lever 15, pivoted at 17 and having a gear segment 16. The segment 16 meshes with a pinion 18 on the same shaft as a gear 19 which engages with a pinion 20 incorporating a one way clutch 21 of the ratchet and. pawl type so that intermittent rotary motion is imparted to a shaft 22. The shaft 22 carries pulleys 23 of the tape conveyer 24. An arm 28 of the bell-crank lever 25 is connected to an upright link 30 the upper end of which is pivotally connected at 31 to a ratchet lever fulcrumed on a shaft 33 having a one-way clutch 34 for imparting through the link periodic rotary motion to the shaft 33. The shaft 33 transmits motion to the chain sprocket 36 on a shaft 37 through a worm gear drive 35, 35a. The drive is transmitted to the sprocket carrying shaft associated with the other chains in any suitable fashion. The drive for the table 5 is similar except that the table is raised instead of lowered. It is arranged that the table 5 is raised an amount corresponding to the amount by which the table 6 is lowered. A manually operable shaft 51 has a worm drive to one of the sprockets, such as 36, for operating the chains 42 when the machine is not working.
